The South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry Society's December 2017 and January 2018 in Review

The South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry Society

At the South Cariboo Elizabeth Fry Society, we are excited to help the women, girls, and families throughout Ashcroft, Cache Creek, Clinton, Spences Bridge, and Walhachin. Here at our small Ashcroft office, we support the principles of the larger Association of societies throughout Canada. During the holiday season of December we had a lot of great events happen in our town. January was a bit more quiet for us, but we were happy for the break! Here is a review of the past couple of months.

December 2017

December was a great month where we were able to help out many people and receive lots of support from the community. Here are some highlights:

CP Rail Holiday Train

On December 15th, the Holiday Train stopped in Ashcroft! Alan Doyle and the Big Beautiful Band played music for the community while we were there accepting donations. We are grateful for the donations we received! We received $5500 from CP Rail for out food bank, 1250lbs of non-perishable food items, and $2203.90 in cash donations.

A big thank you to everyone who came for believing in the work that we do! And another big thank you to the TCMHA PeeWee team and Fred Buckland, Ken and Lorraine Martin, and Hiroko Kanamaru for all of their help with collecting donations and manning the refreshment table.

Food Drive Delivery

Students from the Desert Sands Community School delivered a load of food to our offices this month for the food bank. We had a lot of help and tons of fun with all the kids! We’re grateful for this food drive donation!

Toys for Joys

Toys for Joys started as a pancake breakfast at the end of November. It was our 3rd time annually holding this event. We’re grateful again for the donations received at that event. In December we saw 75 children needing toys for Christmas. Parents and/or Guardians were able to come to the office and receive toys for their children.

We want to say a special thank you to Second Time Around for their $500 donation to go towards the purchase of toys for the children as well as the Teck Highland Valley mill workers for a vehicle full of toy donations.

January 2018

Not a lot has been happening in January, but we’re happy to be back to start a new year. Here are a few little things we’ve been doing this year:

Happy New Year

Our office was closed from December 21st to January 2nd, so no one was here at the office to ring in the new year. However, we want to wish everyone a happy new year! Good luck and best wishes to all in 2018. We hope we can continue to be a source of support to this community we serve.

Back into the Routine

After the holidays, we had to spend a few days getting back into the ‘routine’ and get our programs running for this year.

Support Groups

So far this year, we have started up our Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group and our Women’s Wellness Circle again. Contact us at the office for more details about these two programs.
